By Ryan Reynolds
Ryan Reynolds, director Tim Miller, comedy genius TJ Miller, and the rest of the stellar Deadpool cast hit-up Hall H at Comic-Con this Saturday to share with fans the world premiere of the much-anticipated movie’s trailer.
Reynolds started the panel off by referencing how fan-leaked footage of the film pushed studios to finally make the movie after eleven years in studio limbo, “One year ago today some a**hole in here leaked that footage and that’s why we are standing here. Tim Miller, the director and I just stood back there shook our heads in kind of awe, thinking ‘how the hell did we get here?’
You guys, the internet, the fans did it.
You guys bent their arms behind their backs, twisted their friggen necks and here we are.”
The Story of Deadpool’s Leaked Footage:
So what exactly was Ryan referring to?
Director Tim Miller opened up in an exclusive interview to Cinemablend.com about how in 2014 a Comic-Con attendee leaked footage of the 2014 Hall H Comic-Con panel onto the web. The fan outrage and excitement over the footage changed the film’s fate forever:
“I had meetings on the Fox lot that following week [after the footage leaked], and that Deadpool footage was all the buzz. It had an impact. You could see it and feel it in the executive suites. It was palatable.
I absolutely believe that the leaked footage served as one of those signature moments when fandom united across all social media platforms and made their voices heard. Can you imagine if the masses had disapproved of the footage? In this ruthless take down culture … it could have been ugly. Fortunately for all involved, it broke on the overwhelmingly positive side. It was a tidal wave of unbridled enthusiasm.”
In a world where an Israeli man is sentenced to fourteen months in prison for leaking Madonna’s latest album, it feels good to know that some artists and directors embrace the momentum and power of the internet.
