The latest incarnation of ‘Tarzan’ will swing into theaters in July, and when it does, it will bring a rebooted leading lady. David Yates’s Jane is no damsel in distress.
When it came time for the Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows director, Yates, to find his Jane, he knew he wanted a strong female, someone who would be a boon to survival. He found it in actor Margot Robbie.
“If you enter the jungle with anybody, you want to go with Margot Robbie. She’s practical, and she’s smart, and she’s resourceful. And she can take care of herself,” Yates said in an interview with Entertainment Weekly.
Tarzan may be set in the Victorian era, but Yates has loosened the confines of Jane’s corset, demanding that the character be capable and contemporary. Robbie fights alongside her leading man, denouncing the “Damsel” in distress role, as is evident in the trailer.
When you consider that David Yates is the director that gave cinema birth to the smart and magically gifted Hermione Granger, it all makes sense.
In addition to the sharp casting and character development, the special effects and overall look of Tarzan is awesome! We can’t wait to see it!
