When deciding to do this video, of course I had to hit Old Town because many say it’s extremely haunted. One of the reasons being is that it’s a huge graveyard, and people were buried all over the area back in the days.
The El Campo Santo Cemetery was built in 1849 and is one of the oldest cemeteries in San Diego. Today, the cemetery is only a fraction of what the size used to be. Apparently, it once took up what is now the Commercial District of Old Town all the way up to Old Town Ave.
Eventually the town expanded, and they began moving some graves and building right over them. In 1889 they needed to build a horse-drawn street car line through the cemetery, covering 18 graves. Eventually, in 1942, it became a road, which is now known to us as San Diego Ave.
Many of the businesses and homes have graves underneath them causing some paranormal activity. Some of the businesses have even personally told me that they have experienced weird things. People claim that when parked around the cemetery, their car’s will suddenly not start, and alarms tend to go off for no reason.
It is said that El Campo Santo Cemetery is haunted. One of the popular ghosts is that of Yankee Jim ,who was hung on a tree next to The Whaley House for stealing a boat. Some say they have seen other apparitions glide above the graves then disappear. Freezing cold spots, floating orbs, and shadowy figures have also been reported.
Visit El Campo Santo Cemetery for yourself if you’re craving a ghostly experience. Happy Halloween!
