It seems like a no-brainer, that the appropriate cast members in Disney’s live-action remake of Mulan would be Chinese. The story is, after all, the tale of a Chinese female warrior fighting in the Chinese army.

But, if we’ve learned anything from #OscarsSoWhite, it’s that Hollywood has a history of “white washing” roles – Tom Cruise as the Last Samuari? Puhleeze.

So when the spec script for Mulan made the rounds, emphasizing the story of a “White Trader” not only to replace Mulan’s love interest Shang but to be the focal point of the movie, some people were ready to take up arms for their favorite fierce female warrior.

But an inside source tells Vulture that the spec script penned by Elizabeth Martin and Lauren Hynek was purchased as a jumping off point. Disney has already hired Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver (Jurassic World) to rework the piece and that all primary roles in the movie will be Chinese.

The studio has also promised to scour the globe for their perfect Mulan with  a worldwide casting search.

Chinese ctresses, If you feel up to the task, it doesn’t matter if you’re from California or Kathmandu, you might stand a chance.

Disney’s animated Mulan was released in 1998 and earned #304.3 million worldwide and earned both Golden Globe and Academy Award nominations.
